Since 2019, our charity, St Peter’s Children and Young People’s Activity Group, has proudly delivered two core initiatives: targeted academic interventions and a three-week summer school.
These interventions come at a crucial point in a child’s education. Research from the UCL Social Research Institute shows that ages 11 to 14 form a “critical window” when even high-ability children from low-income backgrounds can start to fall behind their wealthier peers, as they transition into secondary school and face higher academic demands with fewer support structures. In Islington, where nearly half of pupils are eligible for free school meals, many children enter this stage already facing financial and stability challenges. By boosting confidence, strengthening core skills, and helping children feel seen and supported, we provide the foundation they need as they move into Year 6 and Year 7 – right at the moment when the risk of falling behind is greatest.
Academic Adventure
We believe every child deserves the chance to see learning as an exciting adventure…
…and to have the support they need to reach their goals. Working closely with our partner schools, we provide additional funding and resources for pupils who need extra tuition. Our focus is on helping children close the attainment gap as they work towards their SATs.
Interventions may include:
- Weekly booster sessions and Saturday school
- External specialist tutors
- Holiday academic programmes
- Meals provided during holiday sessions
N1 Summer Adventure School
Summer holidays can be challenging for many families…
…and holiday clubs are often costly. Our three-week Summer Adventure School offers an enriching, fully funded experience for selected Year 5 and Year 6 pupils from our partner schools.
Led by experienced education professionals, the programme provides a nurturing environment and a curriculum full of adventurous learning. Children take part in activities such as kayaking, gardening, science experiments, cooking, team sports, and a range of exciting educational trips.
